ITINERARY 

 

08:30 hrs: Visit the Karen Long Neck tribe on this tour. Explore the area north of Chiang Mai and learn about the fascinating culture of this group now residing in Northern Thailand.

 

On the way to the Karen Long Neck hill tribe we stop at the Thaton Temple (Wat). Thaton Temple is a large temple complex in a very attractive setting, only a few kilometers from the border with neighboring Myanmar. The temple is located on top of a hill overlooking the village of Ban Thaton and the Mae Kok river. It is built over several levels of a forested hill offering magnificent views over the surrounding rural area.

 

After exploring Thaton Temple lunch is served at a local restaurant on the banks of the Mae Kok River. After Lunch we contiue onwards to the Long Neck Karen Hilltribe Village. The Karen are a tribal group who historically lived in the hills on the Myanmar (formerly Burma) side of the Thai border.  Best recognized for their elongated necks, the Karen women wear heavy brass rings around their necks, forearms, and shins. While the Karen men are mainly field workers and farmers, the women have a rich history of crafting from wood carving to weaving.  Overall the Long Neck Tribes live a rugged, tedious, and simple lifestyle, but the fruits of their labor are colorful and very lively.

 

We head back to Chiang Mai in the late afternoon.
