ITINERARY 

 

DAY 1: CHIANG MAI - THATON
 
In the morning pick up in Chiang Mai from your hotel, airport or railway station. Drive north with brief stops at an orchid farm and at a local country side market en route to a elephant camp near Chiang Dao. Here you can observe these giant majestic creatures taking their daily morning bath in the river. Then continue to explore a mystic cave temple near Fang and also take a look at a traditional rice mill. In Thaton visit Wat Thaton, which is dominated by giant Buddha statues that overlook the Mae Kok Valley, as well as the nearby Burmese mountain wilderness. Finally take a short side trip to a remote Lahu hill tribe village. Overnight in Thaton.
 
DAY 2: THATON - GOLDEN TRIANGLE - CHIANG RAI
 
First travel up to Doi Maesalong, a mountain village of the Kuomingtan (Descendants of 1949 fleeing Chinese renegade army). Here you can also visit a tea plantation and factory. En route pass various hill tribe villages like the Lisu, Akha and Yao. Take brief stops at some of them. Descend down winding and scenic roads to Mae Sai, a market and border town with neighbouring Myanmar. Take a stroll over the bustling border market. Then continue to the the mighty Mekong River, where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet (known as the Golden Triangle). Enjoy a short boat ride on the Mekong with a stop at the Laotian river island Don Sao. Then go on via Chiang Saen to Chiang Rai where we will stay overnight.
 
DAY 3: CHIANG RAI - CHIANG MAI
 
After breakfast, start your journey back to Chiang Mai. En route visit the beautiful Wat Rong Khun (white temple) and the hot springs near Mae Kachan. Arrive back to Chiang Mai in the early afternoon. The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure to wonder around and shop or just relax. Finally it is time for the transfer to your hotel, airport or railway station. Depending on your further schedule.
